April is a fickle tease.
She undresses me with sunshine
then throws cold water in my face.
Head bent into Subway
I escape, subdued.
But across Main Street
five girls dance arm and arm
chanting loud enough
to challenge the heavens:
Hey, Bitch
It’s rain’n.
Hey, Bitch
Don’t care.
Hey, Bitch
It’s rain’n.
Hey, Bitch
Don’t care.
In Subway, fresh bread is baking.
I wrap the warm aroma around me like a blanket
sip my Diet Coke, scribble.
While outside
as I suppose God intended
it’s the young who stand against the storm.

Love the strong sensory images! She IS a fickle tease, isn’t she? Still, we love her anyway!

Love this part!

Which is exactly the kind of day it was here – clothes drying on the line – sudden hailstones!

I wrap the aroma around me like a blanket. Perfect.

It seems to me it’s not so much the young who stand, as the girls. Imagine thinking April’s strains are flirting!

Really enjoyed this – liked the repetition of the girls’ chants.
Thanks for sharing.

Lovely poem! The main character is April and it’s a nice name also. I also love street dancing, fair for everyone that sings too. Best wishes – Lisa
