BEAR NECESSITIES • by K.C. Ball

Sara Blaine loved bears so much
that seldom could she stand
to be without a bear or three
clutched in each chubby hand.

Her bearish passions were intense.
At bedtime every night,
she’d kick and cuss and raise a fuss
if there weren’t bears in sight.

Old torn teddies (much abused)
and fancy bears that walked.
Dress-up bears in high-heeled shoes.
Expensive bears that talked.

Sara’s loving parents
found her passion frightened them,
but neither one was quite inclined
to stand against her whim.

So, they just let their daughter be,
to spin her teddied schemes.
Her bearish days were spent alone;
her nights in ursine dreams.

But when they heard loud cries of pain
and screams of abject fright,
they hurried in to Sara’s room.
T’was late one gloomy night.

They reached the door together,
Dad thrust it open wide,
but neither one was quite prepared
for what they found inside.

The room looked just as it had looked
earlier that night.
Except for all of Sara’s bears.
Oh, what a grizzly sight!

The creatures had been tossed about,
on bed and floor and chest;
a brand-new giant teddy bear
lay there among the rest.

It had on Sara’s nightdress.
Its mouth held Sara’s smile.
It sat with arms akimbo
in familiar Sara style.

Police were called; they searched for her,
but found not hide nor hair.
And all agreed such things occur
when dreams are brought to bear.

Ursus Major and Ursus Minor, a mutual admiration society,
Walked off to converse one day.
Ursus Major said, I suggest we stay.
Let’s hide and avoid false sense of propriety.

Nothing like a nice teddy bear story to start a season of toys – Very festive ;)

Said Ursus Major to Ursus Minor, “No, let’s haste away.
Disdain of home and never-a-care are finest macho propriety.”
