CLICK! THINK QUICK • by Olivia Berrier

“Keep hands and arms inside the cart.
Enjoy your ride.”
My heart races as I rise.
Click click and I think:
The rent is due. Is this ride safe?
My dad is sick. I want a coke.

40 feet above ground,
I glance below me – bad idea.
I watch the sky instead.
Click click and I think:
Leaky sink. Fear of heights. Boyfriend’s grin.
Clouds like pigs. Cherry Trees. Computers.

Jittery people
hiding in a row of carts
pulled upward, always higher.
Click click and I think:
My hair. Karen. Hard seat. Purple.
Nightmares. Pigeons. Circle. The ground.

Almost there.
Heart pounds, not ready.
Want off! Hate coasters!
Click click and I think:
Bees. Bills. Click. Have. Hate. Click.
Late. Click. Fate. Click. Can. Click. Could.
Click Click Click Click Click…click…stop.

I balance atop the mountain,
drift forward, let go.
I smile, screaming.
And as I fall, I think:

Nothing

I like how the adrenaline descent finally turns off all the noise & distractions going on in her head. ;-)

Impressive development of use of rhythm and cadence. I get caught in some of the phrases, for example: “Clouds like pigs.” Poem could be pulled a little tighter in some ways, making in close to wonderful.

Yup! That about describes it. I was right there with you.

I meant of course “making it close to wonderful.”

I meant, of course, “making it close to wonderful.”

I think this comment section has gremlins.

Maybe the gremlins changed “it” to “in.”
I don’t care much for fantasy genres.

You have captured the feelings exactly! I know it so well. I just close my eyes and hold tight.
