Grief should travel in a straight line.
Not meander about
on a Sunday drive,
with nowhere important to go.
Why must it veer off
to guilt and regrets,
detour to what-could-have-beens?
Worse, take a joy ride
to memories of what-was?
No, grief should be a straight shot:
Leave, arrive, and get out.
Carol Ayer’s poetry has been published by flashquake, Poesia, TeenAge Magazine, and in the anthology “Freckles to Wrinkles.”

Beautifully said, Carol. To someone who easily gets lost in the detours, these sentiments are deeply felt.

This is a lovely poem.
Deep feelings presented in an unusual and thoughtful way.

The poem itself, its pace and rhythms, it’s being tied or not to the constraints of rhyme is, as in all significant poetry, congruent with the message of the poem.

Like the straight line you wish grief would follow, so did your lovely poem. Perfetto. Peace, Linda
