ODE TO THE TILES OF MY BATHROOM FLOOR • by Doug Paul Case

You are always
so hard
on my knees.

This stability
was the upside
to retching
into the toilet
that night
and stumbling
from the tub
the next morning.

You will never
be soft.

The theme to this poem could have been expanded. I wasn’t too taken with the word ’soft’ – ‘gentle’ would have better personified the tiled floor.

Is “stability” the right word or should it be “impermeability”? Should “soft” be “absorbent”?
Is a line missing, such as “sending hosannas to your to your soft sponge submission as I stumble cleanly from the tub the next morning?”

I found this amusing, especially on a Friday (thinking of college kids and the weekend…). Sure, it could be expanded and other words considered, but this works!

Very clever. I don’t think I’ve ever even thought of paying homage to the bathroom floors hardness.

And how reassuring it is to know, they will never be soft. That’s something you can count on.
