Wildfires spill o’er the long hills,
dry grasses feeding the flame.
Oh, for sweet, golden days of autumn,
her gentle airs, her clear, crisp rains.
Brittle comes the gloaming,
hot the singeing windswept embers.
For in the darkling eve
the orange-hued horizon
holds not a promise of gentle dawning.
Only death, gasping, one’s last breath,
teary-eyed, a shudder quakes the body,
the soul mourns in unbound flight from Earth.
Away!–away into the great vastness
of unknown dimensions,
free from fire, from flame.
Where embers dare not fall.
Soft winds spill o’er the long hills,
long grasses dance in their wake.
Here lay spring’s soft, yet glorious days,
her gentle winds, her fertile grounds.
Crickets chirp, greeting the gloaming,
stars wink, cool from heavens above.
For in even’s warm embrace,
the moon rises in her grace,
and holds a promise of restful peace.
Of deep soft, sighing, silent breaths,
shut-eyed, sweetly dreaming.
Soulful rest in blissful slumber’s mirth.
Away!–away into dreamland,
safe, secure.
Free from fear, unfettered.
Where embers dare not fall.

I’m a sucker for Wordsworth, so the archaic style and and content was very evocative for me.

In these summer months comments tendto be sparse but – be assured more people read than respond. Thank you for the poem,

Always a fan of your work, well done, another stonker of a poem.
I loved the light touches of rhyming here and there as well. Made me grin.
Nicely done.

Very evocative description – cool winking stars (stanza 2, line 6)( admittedly part of the “great vastness” (stanza 1, line 13) while roaming in the gloaming, away from sparkless shut-eyed unfettered, unwary dreamers(stanza 2, lines 11-16). Paints strong pictures.
