PLAIN ENGLISH • by C.L. Holland

Basically

at this moment in time

thinking outside the box

is

a glass half empty.

I hear what you’re saying

but

to be honest

it boggles the mind.

Please

bear with me.

I’m

between a rock and a hard place

24/7,

pushing the envelope

but someone keeps

moving the goalposts.

In terms of

addressing the issue

it’s hardly rocket science.

At the end of the day

the bottom line is

we’re not

touching base.

Can I say that I loved this without it sounding too much like a cliche? ;)

    Thanks, C.L. Great read!

    Great poem!

When I was a reporter covering city, county, and school board meetings, I would play play “Cliche Bingo” with the other reporters using cards I made including a lot of these terms.

It was the only thing that got me through.

I just adored this poem. Language talking about language – such a fun way to use cliche – poking fun at itself and skirting around the meaningless relationship, in meaningless terms :) Excellent! Is that an octopus I hear singing its swan song?
Thank you for the very tongue in cheek poem.

C.L. … I really like this one. My favorite so far on Every Day Poets. I like the way you used snippets we all hear every single day, and then showed us all how we’re not really communicating. Thanks for a well done poem.

Hope there won’t be blood on the carpet if I say that this poem really has its finger on the pulse, as it were…
