One day during a dreary afternoon,
I suddenly and very truthfully saw you
like a vision whipped up by a whim
coming in like a prophecy, dancing in
like a slant of afternoon sun on wet skin,
fully exposed, full frontal view, displaying
this wide open map of an entirely new
terrain where an unknown
ground was beginning to unwrap
in such a familiar and friendly way
that there was never any question of saying
no to the question that rose between us.
We did not need to pop it over a bottle of bubbly
or gather it like Christmas presents under the tree.
There was no need for words between you and me.
