to G. M. Hopkins
Glimpses through the trees were all I caught,
the streak and gleam that hint at certain strength,
as its dodging through the trees escaped
my sight again. The teasing almost-seen
at every river bend and wrinkle pushed
me on. The river slipped by rocks and fallen
trees; the flood’s torrent rolled past
hidden animals,
until I turned
a sweeping bend without steep banks.
There it perched, aloof.
I knew
that all my speed and swiftness, twists and turnings
brought me no great merit in its eyes.
Yet I will ever twist and spin for one
more glimpse.

Beautiful. I remember chasing an eagle once…on water.
