THE BEST BITE • by Natalie McNabb

At ten I imagined that love

was like the best bite of

my peanut butter and jelly,

the sandwich’s belly

after crust had been slipped

discreetly to the dog—

where tingles of berries

and smooth,

salty peanut

mingled and melted,

then merged

when pressed to the roof

of my mouth

by my tongue.

But, with you

my tongue came to savor

the crust too.

Jelly belly mingling merging melting… The universal (To this country.) PBJ used as a metaphor for togetherness. Outstanding in my book. I wish I had written it. 5 sandwiches..er..stars.

I just finished a peanut butter and bread end-of-the-night treat – sadly there was nobody here to share it with as you did the poem.
