She’s always been worried about me;
the glass eye in my head,
cleft lip and palate,
stunted growth.
She tells me sometimes a tree stump
wrapped in plastic
all winter long,
blooms to life come spring.
She wants me to believe in miracles,
presumes to pass me
like an offering plate
before the altar.
She says when I was born
the nurses gave her a rose
for each day I spent
in the ICU tied to tubes.
She shows me a bouquet,
now dead and dry,
tells me to touch them
and they’ll come to life.
I stretch out my arm,
let my fingers fall like rain,
until the only sound I hear
is the noise of her tears.
