She wants the world
to spin faster. Her desire
to sip from a crystal glass
of cork-pulled-red,
smell rose fragrant air,
re-kiss the long kisses of youth.
Sink dish full, washrag hung
over the waterspout;
another today whirls by.
The routine, framed
by her windowpaned vision
of songbirds on the feeder,
their pecking order
for a prime seed.
Her husband downstairs
in constant revision,
alone with his poetry,
the walls dammed by free earth
plowed against the foundation
so many years ago.
She pauses, thinks about her mother,
the cooking apron she wore
every day, how it clung
to her sturdy contour,
as she spent entire weekends
hidden away in the kitchen.

Ah, but it’s a window of the thinnest glass, eh? Thoroughly enjoyed. I’m also enjoying your blog. Thanks for remembering John, though it’s not my favorite photo of him (prefer the Statue of Liberty shot.)
I also note we’re in the same (October) issue of Orange Room Review. I’m honored to have such august company.

Those last two lines remind me of my own mother. I immediately loved this poem. Thank you for sharing it.
