I have five dictionaries, but the one I most use does not have it. I shall add the word "scry" to my list of new-to-me fantasy words. Thank you.

Roberta: It's often good to have more than one dictionary. "Scry" is somewhat archaic, but it's still a word. PK Maric offered a fine definition above; indeed, it's pretty much the same as that I found in my dictionary just now.

There is no need for an apostrophe.

Really enjoyed this! I liked the rhythm and rhyme, which carried along the argument. And whether "scry" is in the dictionary or not - those of us who read fantasy are surely very familiar with it...

My dictionary has no word "scry." I think the word "scry" should be spelled "'scry" with the apostrophe beginning the word for:
1. descry -v.t. to see (something unclear or distant) by looking carefully; discern; espy
2. to discover; perceive; detect.

Thanks for the comments all.

And thank you, Oonah and crew, for this outlet for creativity. Thanks for the heads-up about the interview, too. I'll try to sound like I know what I'm talking about ...

Well done, Steve. I really enjoyed the forceful rhythm of this and liked the playing around with words. "Guesstimating" ! Great fun.
Found "mages" in the dictionary, but "scry"? Where'd that come from?!

Great concept. Very fine writing in a tradional rhyming style and rhythm which carries the reader along in it's stride-like, parrying pace.
