VENTRILOQUY • by Ron. Lavalette

What time did you
come to bed
she asked

and when he told her
midnight she said

too late, too late,
you’re always up too late

and he could hear
in her voice

his doctor’s voice
his mother’s voice

the clarion voices
of his guardian angels

they only give us five stars to work with. How shortsighted of them.

The ending, of course, pulls this one out of ordinary conversation and turns it into More. I am always surprised by your poems, but it’s a surprise-thing I’ve come to expect. This one, included.

Is it that lateness is relative?
