WHISPERS IN ITS SILENCE • by Jon M. Forceton

Adrift,

focused deep within,

her mother’s aging mind

falters,

vaguely senses

movement in its mist,

her daughter’s nameless face.

Whispers

in its silence,

a subtle, primal thought ,

familiar stranger’s voice,

but her mind cannot hold it.

Restive, recognition flickers, now

fades,

evaporates

even as it’s understood.

Precious past cast off,

her mind wanders,

the present and the presence lost,

her mind daily dwindles,

forever lost,

adrift.

She may be concentrating on something else. The whispered silence behind all the world’s noises might be “the music of the spheres,” an ancient concept (Ancient Greece and others) that the heavenly bodies (stars and planets) create, in geometrical measures, a silent musical hymn to creation in which we, in some measure, partake.

    Adrift, indeed. Sad but true.
    “her daughter’s nameless face”
    “familiar stranger’s voice”
    It says it all.

A very adept and touching take on a sadly all too familiar situation. You caught it beautifully, Jon.

Roberta – I agree she may be listening to that silence but sadly she doesn’t know it. I also think the silence of that particular sphere, and by the way, I’m thinking it can never be total, is really a quantum mechanical manifestation that in the years ahead we’ll talk about by another name.

Irena and Sandra – Thanks for your generous comments. The silence was deafening.

    “Precious past cast off,”

I just love this line. It speaks volumes.
